This doesn't tell us much. I've heard a few OLD BIG TRUCKS in my day. They all sound different. Same goes for an airplane engine - Radial? Twin? Flat 4? Turboprop? Jet? Merlin? What?

Anyone else want to tackle this? "Noise" questions! Gotta love 'em.

The OLD BIG TRUCK might be the supercharger itself. Upon start up, the supercharger experiences gear back lash for roughly 10-30 seconds, then settles down to a more "marbles in a can" type noise. This is typical for Comptech superchargers.

The AIRPLANE noise might be the air pump pumping in air to accelerate the emissions process to warm up the catalyc converter, thus causing less pollution in the air.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

It's normal to make "lots of noise" compared to the stock engine, but it's hard to judge over the Internet. If it runs OK and there's no vibration it's probably fine.

There will be the noise from the internal gears - makes rattling sounds at idle, almost as if there's something loose in there. From inside the car it sounds a little like a diesel knock going on. When you drive the car under load almost all of this goes away or is masked by other engine/air noises.

Then there is the "air" sound that will vary with rpm and whether you've got the stock air filter or done something different. Mine is loudest at 2900rpm with the standard Comptech intake, not a problem since most driving is above that.

XV - We (you) should get a copy of Honda's explanation of car noises. I've seen it posted at my local dealer. It has excellent descriptions of about 40 different noises and would be a great reference to have here so members can refer to it and decide if their noise is a "grind" or a "groan" or a "bump" or a "thump". If you can't find it I'll go make a copy and try to OCR it.

The air pump referred to by Liemoanh only runs for like 60-90 seconds when the car is first started, and only if the engine is cold. I've never heard mine run, but then I haven't listened for it.

I've never seen this. It would be interesting to have this posted up. If you can post this up in a thread in UTH, I'll link it to the FAQ thread.

Maybe you live next to an airport encompassed by a few highways? I'm not much of an expert but I remember that I always use to hear a hissing sound everytime I would start my car. I figured it to be a normal mechanism. I never did hear about that "noise" guide Honda published.

My car makes all kinds of noises. I also have an 04 with the comptech kit with AC and just installed the Godzilla BOV. My friend drove with me the other day and he said that he doesn't know which noise does what because there are so many. SC whine, BOV letting out air, the grind at idle, the sucking of the intake......and it does resemble a jet engine at idle.
