so you need more of the fuel to get the same reaction (or bang)

exactly! so you make less HP. because you are squirting the same amount of gas(w/10% E) so 10% of the gas is making less bang. therefore making less HP
You transfer less energy to the wheels from one tank of ethanol, but ethanol itself is capable of getting the engine to higher power levels than regular gas. You need a richer A/F ratio to run a car at the same power with ethanol and will be using more fuel. The pros with ethanol is the higher octane value, and the fact that it makes the engine run cooler due to the denser a/f ratio.
So therefor, If you make less hp depends on your tune, if you are tuned for gas and get 10% ethanol in your engine at the same tune, yes it sounds logical you would produce less power.
From what I have heard, a certain turbo seem to be good for higher HP numbers on cars running ethanol. Don't ask me why.

10% ethyl (acohol) is used as an additive to gasoline which helps reduce CO emissions because it contains oxygen, raises the octane rating by 3 points, absorbs moisture in the fuel tank and cleans the fuel system. There are many disadvantages like clogging of fuel filters with dirt and debris cleaned from fuel tank pump and lines, it reduces the heat content of the fuel mixture - alcohol has about 1/2 of the energy (BTU) content of gasoline per gallon. Alcohol does not vaporize easily at low temperatures. It absorbs water then separates from gas sitting at the bottom of the tank which can lead to hard starts during cold weather. This info is from an alternative fuels training course I had to to take a while back, I think I still have a lot of notes from the class if anyone is interested.
s2k I have to agree with your statement above, it is a great way for oil companies to increase profits. In most cases the use of only 10% has very little effect on our engine/fuel system operation but makes a huge difference for the guys at the $$$.

I would think it would help out. I think ethanol has a lower flash point than gasoline, so not as much heat is produced. There is a sponsor on here that makes S2k e85 fuel systems. I think he is also running in the mid-20psi range on e85. I think the 10% blend is just a much more diluted version of e85 (10% ethanol vs. 85%). I would think it would reduce chance of knock and would not reduce overall performance, as the octane rating is still the same as straight gas (maybe they use some octane boosters to counteract the ethanol?).
I think.

Using E85 you can safely run much higher boost and hence produce more overall power but you will use a hell of a lot of ethanol to do it. Think 1600cc injectors!
E10 in a standard car does very little to your performance or the environment but reduces the cost of fuel. Whether or not this is passed on to consumers is a question of economics.

so if the E10 reduces costs then why the hell do they keep raising the damn prices
We have it at basically every station here in GA and now @ $4 a gallon

I just put ethanol fuel in my probe, is now running like crap, backfiring , bubbling, motor shaking, Ethanol is lower octane isnt it so you need to put an octane booster in your fuel tank, ethanol doesnt improve the performance, my car is barely making it up hills at the moment, its ridiculous!!!!!!!!
