Default Cracked Manifold...

Hi All:

I am wondering if any one had repaired cracked manifold before?
How long does it last after your last repair?

Did you just reweld the cracked area or something else you did, so the crack would not happen again?

Please share your experience...

thanks,
sunny

it can last a really long time depending on how its fixed. If you just lay a weld right over the crack it wont last too long. If you actually take some time and grind away the material where the crack is and then reweld back then it would last a long time.

Can anyone tell me where to go to get good welding service in Los Angeles area.
I prefer the one who can give at least 6 months to 1 year warranty of the works.

if one weld fails.. most of the time, depending on the design of the manifold, the rest will go because of lack of preparation/penetration when it was originally welded..

sure, someone might guarantee THAT ONE bead from failure.. but once the rest start breaking, youre pretty much forked..

^ if one weld went then the rest will go due to same qulity of all the welds

WOW FALSE STATEMENT!

How about you only chime in when you know you are not spreading false information.

There could have been a contaminant in that particular weld site. Also at that particular area he could have relaxed the amps on the control and not got good penetration. Also there could have been a breeze or variable that caused there not to be good gas coverage introducing oxygen for a moment at that particular weld site. Also there could have been a contaminant actually in the SS itself left from the manufacturing stage.

To say now that one weld cracked so the whole thing will let go is just a naive comment not understanding welding as a whole with its processes and complexity. Eventually everything goes. We know this. But for all we know another weld doesn't crack for another 3-4 years.

Tubular manifolds are like clutches.......they don't break everyday, but they are a wear item and do need to be replaced or repaired. You

I am wondering what is the negative effects to have hairline crack on the manifold, besides getting wider cracks (which I am sure will happen). I was told it could damage the engine gasket, is it true?

I noticed hot air came out from the crack spot, but after the engine was really hot, the crack seemed to attach well together. No more pss..sst sound when I accelerate.

By the way, the crack is at the welding between engine block to the tubes...

dump that manifold and get a new one. since you already have a crack in your manifold, I wouldn't trust the rest of it to be good welds.

Actually, why don't you post a pic of your manifold and I'll tell you if the other welds are good or not.
