Hi all.

I'm trying to gather as much info on our diffs... why they break, what are the weak spots etc. And then, I found this, which sounds pretty logical:

If you don't want to read the entire article, here's the short version:

-The bearing caps are held bij 4 m10 bolts
-The bearing cap fastener bores are slightly bigger than the bolts
-The only thing keeping the caps on their exact place (which is critical) is the under-head tension of the 4 bolts
-When warm, and enough power is put through the pinion, it might cause the caps to come slightly out of alignment, causing the gears to tear eachother up


So it sounds like something worth trying to drill out the bearing cap fastener bores, mount 4 dowels, put it all back together and see what happens.



Anyone here ever read this article? Or even tried this?

Sounds easy enough to try, but the prevailing successful diff upgrades all consist of added bearing caps and sometimes stronger hardware. That article even acknowledge Comptech did this to great success, but then discounts it being the correct solution

I don't see how the caps can move laterally with bearings inside them. However the caps deflecting backward, or the bolts stretching seems easy to explain and would certainly lead to failure.

Again, an easy thing to test, but I don't see it anywhere near as successful as a PuddyMod diff, for example.

 

Ben, (puddymod) modifies the differentials properly. His reinforcements are done properly, with excellent hardware and quality machine work. There are others who have tried something similar, with lower quality. They have not been as successful. Don't waste your time on others. And it's absolutely not a DIY project. The original caps are machined carefully. Then tough steel "straps" are fabricated that have a direct fit above the modified OEM caps. The entire assembly is held together with much more robust hardware.

Notice the perfect fit of the strap to the cap. This allows it to "carry the load" properly.

 

If you're looking for a diff, there's a diff by kings that's rated for 650whp for less than 800$. I'd been thinkin of getting that. Seems like the best bang for the buck. Also puddy makes bad ass diff but his stage 2.5 is better imo but it's like $1500 plus core

OP, I strongly suggest contacting PuddMod racing. He is very knowledgable and can tailor your diff to your power level and wallet. He is very approachable as well.

 

Yes I have. Tbh just because they had issues with their deal doesn't mean they will screw everyone else on their product. They do have a business to run and I'm sure the more issues they'll have the less customers they will get lol


Anyways I haven't seen so many reviews or run those diff on s2ki. However, I did meet someone who's running their diff at a local meet. He never did had any issues and have launched the diff many times. Broke 3 transmissions all on 2nd lol

 

Not only are their zero reviews on what the Kings kit involves. Who would want to play ginnea pig lol? Heck, do you have their product? I warn the OP(seems to be a newer member) as I wouldn't risk him/her of having a disappointment with product or *customer service*. I have the PuddyMod stage 2. Speak to Ben everytime I see him, know several of his other customers, and knows he has great customer service, all first hand experience.
