My super late model stock car has a small block Chevy, and by the rules the only way to check the mixture was by reading the plugs. Always a good way to get burned hands. However, after the coating (in those days what now would be a thinner, silver coating) it was cool enough to reach for the plug without gloves.

I'd be rather surprised if it doesn't make a meaningful difference in temps. Did you take measurements with an IR temp tool?
