DOES ANYONE KNOW COST OF FINE
I know it differs from State to State, but I would appreciate if you could provide this info as a friend of mine has a turbo in his MR2 and it's not carb legal. He wants to drive it from NY to LA. Is he taking a risk by doing this (i.e., if he gets stopped and cops find out that his boost isn't carb legal)?
I know it's illegal here California, but I can't even find info on cost of fine.
Appreciate your help.
PS. Does a legal "turbo" boost for S2K exist? (sorry for being so damn about this)

No legal turbo exists for the s2k. Greddy mentioned possibly making a carb legal turbo kit but AFAIK, they scraped that idea for now.
As far as the fines, I guess it depends on the state. Usually if you have FI, you prob don't have a cat either which can be a very costly fine (especially in CA). As far as exact prices go, I have no idea sorry.

If the car has out of state plates, I don't think it'll matter.
However in CA, If you get pulled over with a non-carb legal parts, the cop will usually schedule you to bring your car to a ref for evaluation; but there's your chance to fix things before you go in.

I got a ticket when I lived in california for having non-CARB legal parts on my 2G DSM. The cop said that I would need to replace the parts with "legal" parts, and then take it to a referee to have it signed off on, then take his certificate to court and show it to the judge to get it dismissed.
However, a few weeks later, I received a 100 dollar mail-in ticket for it in the mail. I simply sent in a check for 100 bucks, and that was that. Never had to take the car to the referee, and I didnt even get rid of any of the "illegal" parts. Maybe the cop or somebody at the courthouse or DMV screwed up, I dont know, but that was my experience.
Oh, and yeah if you have out-of-state plates, pretty sure they cant do anything to you. You only have to play by the rules of whichever state the car is registered in. The whole "CARB" thing is california-specific (California air resources board).

Hmm... this is something I've been wondering about. I was thinking of going to post bac/grad school in california after I graduate in May '08, but I'm afraid that I'd have to give up my turbo for a sc setup (F that
)
How long can you survive in a state with foreign (out of state) plates? Could I say that I live with my mother still in Atlanta and that I'm temporarily staying in Cali for school, even if it'd be for a few years?

[QUOTE]Visitors whose vehicles are properly registered to them in their home state may operate their vehicles in California until they:
Accept gainful employment in California.
Claim a homeowner's exemption in California.
Rent or lease a residence in California.
Intend to live or be located here on a permanent basis (for example, acquire a California driver license, acquire other licenses not ordinarily extended to a nonresident, registered to vote).

That sure looks like a "no" but I bet you could get away with it as long as you dont piss off any cops. I have known a few people that have gone literally years with out-of-state plates.

Just hearing from stories about how strict people are here on s2ki... and being that I've never been out west before (texas is the furthest I've ever been), it almost seems like there are paid cops on every street corner waiting to pull over loud cars and immediately pop their hood looking for illegal stuff. I know that's a joke, but, how strict are they really? Do people just drive turbo setups around and just pray that they don't ever get inspected or something?
California is pretty damn strict on that stuff. Cop that pulled me over made me pop my hood because "your car sounds loud". Then he starts writing me up on stuff under the hood, even going so far as to start snapping polaroids of the exhaust piping underneath the car. You're definitely taking a chance if you go non-CARB in California. But again, I believe if you had out-of-state plates, you wouldnt have a whole lot to worry about.
And I didnt even think about this earlier, but not only do you have to consider cops, but if you register it in cali, you have to get your car to pass emissions every other year. And really the only way around that is to have a hookup with somebody that does smog tests, which many people are hesitant to hook you up on because they can get in big trouble for that if they're caught, so they're taking a big risk as well.
Thankfully, I now live in a place where there is no emissions testing or any of that CARB bullshit, so I dont have to worry about big brother checking in on me to look for "illegal" mods.
