Default Forced induction and the CARB.....

Hello everyone ive gotten the urge to install a turbo or SC to my 00' S2k.

She is an 00' has 80k miles on her and i dont want to make astronomical numbers, 300-350whp max. But i really dont feel like spending the $6,000 its going to cost to by an off the shelf kit.
Im more than capable of making a manifold, tube routing, mounting, wiring etc.

What is it that makes these kits CARB legal? What would i need to do so i can pass smog every other year without a huge headache =/

Thank you for your time,

Andrew

Official carb certification=expensive hassle

It's the reason why the SOS kits don't carry the carb exempt status.

I guess what im getting at is what would i need to do in terms of passing smog? I understand the visual portion but for the emissions?

Keep all the original parts and put it back to stock for the smog check. The only way for sure.

you can't "make" any kit, whether off the shelf or DIY, CARB legal or smog legal. For a kit to be able to pass smog, it has to be CARB legal, and to be carb legal it has to have gone through testing and certification.

Therefore, as others have said, you need to either buy a carb legal kit, take the kit off and smog stock or pay someone off. Those are truly your only 3 options.

Vortech is discontinuing the kits and parts, so just be aware of that too.

The Vortech is not CARB legal. The only CARB legal system is the Comptech/CT Engineering supercharger.

I'm really pleased with the Comptech kit. It is possible to make good power and pass smog. I've got mine set up with a 3" pulley using stock ecu by adding a 5th injector controlled by a Hobbs switch. The plumbing, wiring and fabrication on the 5th injector look good enough to pass for factory so it always passed the visual inspection. For good measure I also inject 50% methanol from a water injection system thats under the cooling plate and can't be seen in visual inspections.
