Default Huge 76mm for street/strip use

Hi, I have some concerns on my build. I bought a 76mm s400sx 1.25 ar with custom billet compressor wheel and race cover. My concern is that the s400sx will be to laggy on the streets? My goals are 750-800rwp e85. High high 9s low 10s on the strip. My setup: Inline pro 6.6 stem valve train, full race twin scroll sidewinder, fbm 8.8, G force t56 dog box 1-4th dog gears 5-6th synchros. My goals are to run my S at the drag strip without trailering to and from. I will swap on my Weld front runners and rear Weld 26 slicks and when done throw on my ccw classic street tire setup r888s. This is gonna be by no means a everyday street turbo car! This is gonna be a monster! As crazy as this sounds, but I will be running my custom tucked ac relocation kit. I want this car to be comfortable high 9s low 10s street/drag car. The car will be driven twice a month if that. Anyone have advice on turbo choice will be greatly appreciated. Should I run my 76mm s400 on the streets maybe swap the 1.25 ar for a smaller .90 ar turbine housing to help with the lag issue? Co2 waste gate kit I hear would help with the lag on the s400? I have a gtx3582r and BW s400sx race spec. I hear my gtx35 is extremely responsive, but not so much top end like the s400. I hate how the Garrett gtx3582r looks like a infant next to the Borg Warner S400sx. As ricer as this sounds I want the cosmetic look of the huge s400, but also want the response from the gtx35. I am so confused : ( I want a monster looking snail with top end, but spools like a gtx3582r? Help!

What about something 66mm like a S366 .91 A/R should still get you in that 750-800 range I'd say.

A 76mm turbo from any vendor on a honda pushed will net you well over 12-1300hp. You are talking a very VERY large turbo. There are people that are making 900+hp on a 62mm class turbo (Granted the turbos don't last long) such as Locash racing.

Realistically, something in the 67mm range will get you to 750-900, while being pushed can net well over 1000 all day, meaning EFR 9174, Precision 6870 Gen2, Garrett GTX4294, Comp 6767 or 6871 and so on.
It boils down to a few factors;
1) The old generation of turbos, meaning original S3xx series, S4xx etc are outdated and don't flow anything what current gen turbos can with the latest generation compressor and turbine wheels
2) You don't need a huge wheel to push the power you're looking for these days
3) BW's latest gen SXE turbos flow significantly more than older generation turbos, and are usually a full step down or more for the same flow characteristics.
4) Honda's don't have crap VE, which means you don't need as much turbo to reach a goal as say a Subaru.
5) Matching your exhaust housing to your power and spool goals is just as important as selecting your compressor and turbine wheel size

I personally chose an EFR 9174 for it's spool characteristics and combined it with a quick spool valve. It will make less peak power than a comparable Comp/Precision turbo, but more than a Garrett. My biggest complaint about the latest garretts is the wheel matching. You'd really need to go to a GTX4294, and you'd really want more turbine, which means 45... They are however the most reliable out of all the vendors.

That's a huge turbo, isnt that what Carey used on the old car?

2 Issues with using too large of a turbo:

It's gonna leave very lazy unless the rpm is very high.

You are going to drop out of boost on shifts.

76mm is too big for those power goals

Here is another option...

Still in the s400 family, but the right compressor size for your goals.

Have you confirmed that you have room for a turbo this large?

Mine is a gtx45r 80mm and yes it's laggy but when it starts spooling, it really goes.

I'm a fan of the gtx series turbos. Maybe a gtx4294?

Garrett did release a GTX4594R And you are correct, the 94mm compressor wheel has a better blade speed ratio with the GT45 turbine vs. the 4294.

I will look into that. Turbo will clear, but I would have to run a half size fbm triple core radiator or a tucked full size radiator like Rywire offers.

That turbo is WAYYYYY overkill for 9-10 second goal. Get the largest A/R Turbine housing the GTX35 can get and I would max it out to like 700 with the GTX and add a direct dry 125hp shot at WOT. That will give you the edge you need to get in the 9`s. With the slicks/skinnies, t56, and 8.8" with even a proper setup 600whp you should be in the 10`s. 700 should be all you need for a mid/high 9 second pass. A 76mm S400 is complete overkill and should only be on a 7 second dedicated drag car. Post more! Good Luck!
