Default Ideal setup for BOV?

Hi everybody,

I still have the Vortech Blow off valve mounted and I'm looking for the ideal setup between hard & soft. So far, when I idle the BOV is venting a lot of hot air and I can see the diaphragma about .7 inch out.

I tried to move my setup to a harder pressure (on the spring) by 5 half turns of the bolt. Now I almost don't hear my BOV blowing anymore and it's still a little bit open in idle, but only about half an inch.

Should the BOV be closed in idle and only open up when I push the pedal/accelerator first and then change gears or pull the clutch? So that the air is not being pressed against the now closed damper flap?

What I want as an ideal setup is a pffft sound as loud as it can get (hard without a turbo pressure) and the BOV working right. What I had before when it was setup to soft pressure it was constantly blowing when I was revving at about 4000-4500 rpms, that could only be wrong, or?

I'm really confused about the BOV, maybe someone can explain the way it should be, also from a technical standpoint.

BTW, I also have a Greddy Type RS, which I couldn't get to whistle a single bit, it stayed noiseless so I mounted the Vortech one back in! Am I to fu**ing stupid or what? Before you ask, no leaks in the system, air comes out in idle already.

TIA,

Andreas

Not stupid, just bitten by the "pfffhhhhssssffftttt" bug.

If you are not at whole open throttle you don't want anymore power. But the blower is still spinning with the engine so it's output has to vent somewhere. That's why the Vortech BOV is venting. If you go WOT and the BOV closes then it is working correctly.

Unfortunately like many others you seem to think the function of a BOV is to create noise. That just isn't the case. It is a side-effect. And it is dependant on the amount of boost released, which in the case of the Vortech SC isn't much.

If you want noise, get one of these:

If you want it to function properly turn it back those 5 half turns.

I"m curious why you like to refer to http://www.takakaira.com/accessories...ightpager.html. Do you have a share in the company? Are you trying to be helpful? perjorative? Or perhaps you have a conditioned response to evoke that website whenever you see the letters "bov" in any format, be it BOV, above, bovine, or other.
Maybe you are trying to squeeze in some humor.
Whatever your intention, it comes off as if you are pointing out someone's ignorance on a subject when you should know well that all of us had to start somewhere, and there is nothing wrong with asking a question. True, others have been more harsh in other contexts, but I see no reason in showing even the slightest bit of coarseness or ridicule in such a forum.
In any case, the constructive information you provided was helpful. Thanks.

I'm just pointing out the flaw in the above diagnosis. I see the above posts as saying:

"My BOV functions, but it doesn't make noise. What should I do?"

If you want a noise maker, buy one. If you want a functional system leave it alone.

I was pretty careful to be polite and went to some length to be informative so I'm not sure what your issue is. You may say my response is fairly predictable, but then this question comes up about once every two days so what would you expect.

And hey, if you've got a better reply why not post it rather than just having a go at me.

A4XRBJ1, correct me if I'm wrong, but I see you saying, "These are the noises that my BOV was making. I tried to rectify the situation, but I think the reality is that I'm not quite certain what noises I should be hearing to ensure functionality of this particular BOV/FI combination. Can somebody tell me what to expect so I can acheive it and have some peace of mind?"

But perhaps you are correct Aus. I'm merely trying to defend (can't really help he probably knows as much as or more than me) a German camarade--not making a go at people.

I think people expect too much of the wrong thing from a BOV on an SC and get disappointed. If you want noise go for the Turbosmart Kompact. It's a simple replacement and as it is small it makes quite a lot of noise with our low boost.
