I had a tune done late last year since I have a roots that goes full boost at any rpm, tuner has VTEC available everywhere in the RPM range depending on throttle. It it going to require a tweak because the car has probelms with it below 3800 rpm at part throttle. If I am WOT it is fine but anything below about 80% throttle, is just not enough below 3800 rpm and it spikes rich, bogs and stumbles until I let off the gas and then floor it.
I guess if you thought you were either going to be always WOT or off the gas it could work, but below 4000 rpm, it gets tricky. I am either going to have him change it to 100% throttle on anything below 4000 rpm to activate, or just shut it off below 4000 rpm all together. For a street car, you spend a lot of time between 3000-4000 rpm and that is not where you want a tune hiccup.
Yeah, bad idea. Shit idle and poor running for 1/3 of the cars power band, when you can simply leave the cams alone, and electronically tune vtec to engage/disengage exactly where you want it to be optimum everywhere in the power band. No sense in making a compromise in performance when its not needed to gain the same net benefit everywhere else.
If you want to retain stock cams you will first need to have the primary outside lobes ground off so you are left with a single lobe cam. Then you will need to purchase either the $1000 ferrea or skunk2 billet roller rockers. Thats your first option.
second option(which I am doing) is run a twin lobe custom cam. This way you can retain your stock rockers. BUT you need to have custom shims made and remove your LMA springs.
Good luck and let us know what you end up doing!

locking the stock rockers in vtec is a waste of time. you gain nothing.
The only thing you gain from going vtec killer is when you can replace the rockers with lighter weight parts. We have done this using OEM k24 exhaust rockers but it doesnt work that well since the k-series rollers are a different diameter and it messes with the cam profile. You gain a little in rpm capability but thats about it.
