external wastegate dumps the excess exhaust gases to the atmosphere; internal re-routes that gas back into the downpipe and through the exhaust system

An external can dump either to atmosphere or back into the exhaust path prior to the cat.

Not completely true

Requesting for some picture diagrams for the internal and external ( request MS paint ) for some visual understanding.
For the most part it sounds tempting to get this if Greddy can pull it off. Hopefully if all goes well we'll probably see a group buy going on soon?

These guys have pictures of internal and external wastegates here.

Both internal and external wastegates can bypass exhaust from before the turbine housing to the air or to the exhaust after the turbine housing.
Internal wastegates are a part of the turbine housing.
External wastegates are a completely separate piece.
Look at the available turbine housings on this link. They show the difference between a turbine housing with an internal wastegate and a turbine housing without an internal wastegate.

This is an internal wastegate turbo. The yellow colored canister is the actuator for the internal wastegate.
