Default to oil cool or not - winter through summer

I know some people have had issues with their oil coolers in the winter months....do we know if this is avoidable by using a thermostat? I will be doing light HPDE track events so I want to make sure my temps stay properly managed. Thinking about doing the oil cooler only in the hot months and taking it off for the cold ones as another option. What do you all suggest?

Thanks!

Justin

Most definitely run a stat if you plan on running it in the winter. I made the awful mistake of not doing so, and my oil temp read 70-100 degrees MAX during winter months.

Thick cold oil is just as bad...

And quite honestly, I'd be very surprised if you were successfully able to manage heat in all forms during HPDE events. There hasn't been much success around here with that...

The ideal solution would be a fairly large oil cooler with a Tstat on it set to open at say 240F+ degrees and close at 220F or something similar.

As dev said, cold oil is terriable on an engine -- that's why you wait for the car to properly warm up before abusing it

I used to wait for the dam thing to warm up, only to see oil temps drop by 30-40 degrees in less than a minute! That's what I got for not running a tstat

ok cool so as long as I get a tstat I'm going to be okay? Would you say I should just wait till next summer as I'm not going to have the kit installed and tuned till the end of September?

Thanks guys!

This is the same thing I am asking myself. If you goto Jeff's house anytime soon, the blue car with no front bumper is mine. You can see my oil cooler in front of the radiator.

great ....oh well maybe I should just hold off till the spring then since I don't think I'll do any track events from the time the car is built till next spring. As an alternitive I will do the following for cooling:

Radiator
Radiator Breathing Tank
Coating
Vented Hood
Possibly a cooling plate
temp monitors
