Default Passing Inspection in MA with FI

My understanding is that cars manufactured before 2001 don't have to go through the emissions portion of the inspection. Does that mean I can get away with installing a turbo and AEM ECU on a my 2000 S2000? Anyone have any experience with where the boundaries are here? I will have to check with my inspection station in the long run, but I was hoping to get some input here first.

I found this thread where someone claims "99 and down do not get OBD inspections, I'm a Lisc inspector". I'm guessing there is a rolling 15 year window, but haven't seen that stated explicitly.

The official MA inspection site claims "Cars, trucks and SUVs manufactured before model year 2001 no longer receive tailpipe emissions tests but fail their safety inspections if they produce visible smoke".

Again, where is the line? Aside from obviously pumping soot out the tailpipe, am I in the clear to pull the stock ECU and throw a turbo kit on this thing? Any advice you can offer or experiences you can share would be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit1: Stopped in at a shop down the road and they claimed that an aftermarket ECU and turbo wouldn't be a problem since there is no emissions inspection after 15 years. Still looking to hear peoples' personal experiences on an S2000 or otherwise, though.

Emissions won't be a problem itself, but if you have an aftermarket exhaust, or no cat they can fail you for that. They won't hook up to your obd2 port so ecu won't matter.

That's good to hear. I have an Invidia catback, but I got the feeling from talking to the shop that it wouldn't be an issue.
