Default School me on gauges

Sup fellas, how about we start a new class Gauges 101 I'm going to be the first to register.

Well, from questions, searches, etc. I have come to acceptance that I WILL need gauges. Only problem is that since I have been trying to avoid them, I haven't learned much about them.

Here are my Q's

1. When purchasing gauges, I'm looking into the Defi blue racer, will any additional parts be needed to accompany them? I have read things such as sensors and what not.

2. Memory? Why would I want to know what already happened? What good will it do for me? (This one is what I'm really confused on)

3. How do you read them? What is normal? What happens if the gauge reads beyond normal while driving, would you pull over right away? If so, then what? Get it towed?

4. If you can only have two gauges, what would it be? Boost and oil temp?

Thanks

In the case of a boost gauge, the memory is helpful so you know what your PSI peaked at. Not a good idea to be looking at the small gauge while you are at 9K full boost.....err I mean 8K for you S2200 owners

I'm going to be running boost and exhaust gas temperature. Only because I have done some research and found if yo uare only running 2 gauges these can identify the most.
The memory thing is good if you want to know that you are over boosting or something is spiking and you want to adjust it.

Other then that I am quite interested in what the vets have to say. If I'm wrong feel free to tell me but from my research that is what I have learned.

1. No idea, I don't own defi

2. Memory is good to have so you can see peak numbers. As stated before, its not safe to watch your boost gauge when your WOT (should be watching the road).

3. You read them by uh, looking at them . Do a search for what is normal on the different kinds of gauges. I posted my oil temp, oil press, water temp, and EGT under a number of conditions some time back. If something like oil pressure goes dead, yeah your going to want to immediatly check it out. The point of them are situtations like that.

4. For turbo Boost and oil pressure. For SC, Boost and oil pressure

I knew it wouldn't be long before you chimed in .

I just brought up defi because I am looking into them, but just gauges in general. I want this thread to be useful for those that have questions as well. Thats why I didn't get into specifics of size of turbo, etc.

But regarding #2. So i see it afterwards, what is that going to do for me? So lets say I'm am at WOT, boost and/or oil pressure, sky rockets, but the car is still running fine afterwards, am I suppose to go get it checked?

Well if your overboosting, the engine could handle it ever once in a while but your going to want to get it checked and fixed to help retain life of your engine. With the memory, you'll know if you should fix something or not

Another reason for it is tuning boost controllers. You can change some settings, WOT run, check your gauge's memory, and play with the settings some more until all is well.

oil pressure, boost, and exhaust temp are the most important. exhaust temp gauges really help because it can tell you if you are running lean or rich. if temps get hot your running lean and temps are cold you are rich. wideband a/f guage is also good if you would want to do street tune to work out bugs, but if it is tuned properly you wont need one.

An oil pressure gauge is the single most important gauge. Make sure that you include this gauge with your setup.

ok so oil pressure not temperature. EGT would be nice to have but I only have room for two gauges. So it will be boost and oil pressure.

What does oil pressure tell me?

Is it hard to do the install of these gauges?

Oil pressure will tell you if you have a leak(if you are loosing oil someplace), or no/low oil in the car(bad thing).
