Sometimes getting slight blue smoke on idle
Hey guys,
Lately I've been noticing some blueish smoke at idle. I do know that there is obviously some oil burning but cant seem to figure out why.
My oil pressure has been perfect, usually 70-80 psi on startup, 35-40 on idle and after a long drive usually it drops down to 25-28.
Oil used is amsoil 10w40.
I have a slight oil leak coming from one of the fittings on my relocation kit and have been keeping an eye out on oil levels. They seem to be fine and sometimes i add a bit if I see its getting a little below high.
I get no smoke on acceleration, deceleration, wot, but it only seems to happen sometimes at idle after i drive the car for a bit. It did it twice, one tonight and one last week but im getting really concerned.
Motor has 68k original miles, however I have not done a compression test since the smoke appeared. A compression test was done right before the car got tuned and it was perfect, about 2 months ago. Haven't really gotten on it too much since the build, roughly 1300 miles ago.
Could this be a bigger problem such as rings/ valve seals? Or should i invest in a catch can or something of that sort?
I had this problem on my last car, but it did it all times especially on deceleration and it turned out to be the rings...doesn't seem to happen at all with the S unless it's idling after a long drive...im confused so any input, comments, or help would be greatly appreciated.

Your turbo needs a rebuild.
I am not a turbo expert, but have owned a couple turbo cars. It was explained to me that turbo seals are stongest when the turbo is spinning but not at idle. Then people have told me that was complete crap and I have never taken apart a turbo to find which was true, but when I had smoke at idle it was true that my turbo was shot. It started to smoke when idling at stoplights, then it began leaking so much oil through the turbo that it poured into the cat and started on fire. The substrate melted when it burned in the cat and rendered the car useless because the exhaust could no loneger move air. I got stuck on the side of the road. The smoke would ONLY happen at idle.
I know you are looking for a more technical explanation, but your turbo needs a rebuild. That is my uneducated $.02.

Turbo is brand new with 1300 miles, Garrett gt series.
I noticed that it seems to happen when I do more spirited driving, so wondering if it can be the famous Pcv valve that is sucking oil into intake manifold and getting burned off when I get out of the car. Usually this happens when I pull into a parking lot after semi hard driving...

i had something like this happening recently too dude when i did my new build, but mine is all gone as well. I think i could have possibly put too much oil when i did my last oil change, it has me scared as hell hahaha..damn NJ boosted s2ks.
How does your oil return line look? It is possible that it is not draining fast enough. Oil could be backing up into the turbo and coming out of the seals.
If that seems to be ok and the turbo is new.. it sounds like valve seals to me. They tend to leak in high vaccum situations when they go bad.
Hope that helps..

check the drain, and here is the best bet on the PCV, go buy a pos fuel filter (preferable clear), and slap it in the line between the pcv and the manifold. drive it around a bit and hit it good, it there is crap in the filter when you check next, guess what, its the PCV. My ap1 was really sucking some oil out on hard turns, and hard on vtec.

it happened to my car, too. i just placed a small breather filter right at the front crankvent on valve cover and it just stopped smoking at idle. i found out that the BRMS catch can combo is not baffled and dont like it to be hooked up there. hope this help.....let me know. then on the PCV valve you definitely need a sealed catch can.
it depends what color of the smoke. it could be normal. does your PCV hooked up to the intake manifold like stock? if you do you might need a sealed catch can.
