Default spark plug disintergration

Another episode in the never ended drama that has been my car.
Been driving for a while, taking it easy while breaking in the engine. I have 1100miles on the new engine now so this weekend I finally took it to redline through 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. It felt awesome. Pulled really strong. Then I drove about 10 miles on the freeway with a couple 4th gear pulls. Everything went smooth. I was really happy. Then I go to my exit. From the light a did a semi hard pull from a roll to about 7k in first and 7K in second. when I backed off to turnon my road the car started hesitating, so I crawled the last 1/4 mile to my garage. This morning I went to check everything. Oil good, and full. Plugs not so good. These are NGK 7173 which my mechanic regapped to 024 (after i had them at 030). What caused this

By the way, I changed the plugs, gapped to 030, and the car runs great again. I just want to know what caused this. I looked at a spark reader and it only matched lead corrosion. But I use unleaded fuel. Am I using the wrong plug for my setup(see sig)?

Why so narrow? Typical is 0.030" to 0.034".

When the metal disappears it is usually preignition. Too much advance, inadequate octane, poor A/F ratio or some combination there of.

There was a little misfiring so he regapped them. It did not change, but we added a full tank of gas (car was sitting for a while) and the misfiring went away. No problems with the misfire after the fuel was changed, but we should have went back and regapped the plugs to 030

.024 is pretty tight for only 10psi. Is your knock control feature checked(on) in the EMS? My guess is detonation. I'm at .030 also with no knock. Let us know what you find out. Good luck.

That's how my stock engine blew. I filled up at the only station for miles in a part I didn't know. The plugs ate themselves up while I was sitting at a red light at idle. Just bad gas.

For my engine, the tip seemed to have melted off and then solidified and scored the sleeves up. This happened to 2 of my plugs :'(
