Supercharger question
Hello all. New member here.
My question may seem foolish but I am really curious to find the answer.
I heard a s2k with a comptech s/c a while ago and the whine from the blower was pretty nice.
The other day I heard a 2002+ mustang passing by me at a stop light and since there was no other traffic I heard a very distinct whine coming from it. It had the modified raised hood which hinted at the presence of the blower too.
Anyways, the whine from the stang was VERY loud- even though the car was going less than 5 mph- and I wanted to know what dictates the sound of a blower (with the exception of the stock design). If somebody were to upgrade the headers, Pulley size, or intake manifold, would that have any affect? I assume a higher psi pulley would but I want some confirmation.
thank you all.

"If" the stang was blown, it's blower needs to push more air. It's got a motor that's over twice the displacement of ours. The blower on it needs to be bigger and/or it needs to spin faster to push more air. The whine is partially due to the supercharger's bearings and partly due to the air it's drawing in and pumping out, even at idle.
Also, you don't know what type of blower it had. It could have had a centrifical (snail type) blower or it could have had a positive displacement (Roots type) blower. Each will sound different.
Since the sound eminates from the blower, it's not likely that those other mods (except for a different blower pulley) will make much difference to the whine.
Here's what my Vortech sounds like at idle:

Thats was interesting. Thank you for your input xviper. I was somewhat correct with my suspicion (sp?). Extracing more power out of the s/c *directly* would result to more whine.
To be completely honest, I asked b/c I like the noise. On my old Toyota I had a turbo kit and the kkk k04 turbo spool was beautiful. But in the genius lies the defect. There were too many issues with having a turbo period that I dont want to deal with one (if its aftermarket).
I would assume someone with a s/c, with a quiet exhuast, silent blow off valve, and no final drive modifications, would hear music come out of the engine bay.
Out of curiousity, how much louder does it get in the higher RPM ? or does it actually get quieter ?

I have the Fujitsubo cat back and below 5000rpm, it's not much louder than stock, so the S/C whine is very noticeable. In fact, driving into a meet in a parking lot gets remarks about how unmistakable the supercharger sound is. Above 5000 rpm, the exhaust noise is all you would hear, except for the telltale Hissssssssssss of the BOV when the throttle plate closes on shifts.
If you could can that noise and sell it for a hundred bucks, a lot of guys would do without the actual mod.
Well, ................................. maybe not.
