thought this would make you guys smile.
last weekend, i had to make a trip to pick up another toy, and a car for my dealership. so i was in an 01 dodge dually with a cummins. first off, we had a kaufman gooseneck on the back, steel deck 2 car, around 40 feet long. so that had to be over a ton we were pulling to start. and our round trip was to be just over 1600 miles, and i did it in less than 24 hours with 3 hours sleep, LOL.
anyways, cool part is.. the turbo was spooled for the entire trip. i had the cruise set with the pedal buried. our speed the majority of the time was 85 mph. on the way home, the trailer had 2 cars on it. so total weight in tow was around 10,000 lbs. i had no idea that the holset HX35 could take that kind of abuse. after that weekend, i have serious respect for that turbo, and that truck. we pulled of the freeway, on the trip back, after being in full boost for 3 hours, and opened the hood with the truck idling, and the turbo was smoking. just a little bit, but that sucker was hot.
it gets a bit better, we are going home, and we get near tehachapi pass, i get a solid run at the base of the mountain (86 mph) and we head up the hill, well as you can expect with that much weight, the ole 5.9 was feeling the heat. we slowed to 45 mph, and were doing decent. well, as we got into the higher elevations, we came to where it had just finished raining, and the atmo changed drastically, you could feel the heavy air, and i watched as the coolant temp dropped off about 30 degrees in less than 2 miles, the truck kicks down,, AND TAKES OFF!. uphill.. cruise on, the truck gains speed, all the way to 86 mph, and we are blowing by everyone laughing our asses off. i was in total shock. and as i already said, majorly impressed with this truck. and it has 110k on it. which isnt alot, but still.
anyways, that is my BOOST story of the month, makes me think alot about putting a turbo on my car. what a blast that would be, next time you think your beating on your turbo and motor, just imagine driving for 18 hours in full spool towing 10k lbs.
