Default Upgraded ignition systems

Who on here has ditched the stock/RSX coil packs and went to something else? How do you like it? How many miles have you ran with it? How much boost are you running and what spark plug gap are you running?

I think the most popular options are AEM Twinfire, MSD DIS-4, M&W, and LS2 coils. I believe people use mostly CBR cols and AEM pencil coils with these.

I've emailed Evans Tuning about their LS2 coil kit that was much talked about last year and he says that it doesn't work well with the AEM EMS and has ditched it. I went through Scott's (dsddcd) thread with his LS2 coil setup and that looked pretty cool, but recall he had some issues as well.

I've also been reading about many many problems with the AEM Twinfire setup where people keep popping fuses and the box fails frequently.

i went from older ap2 (04-05) coils, to 07 ap2 coils and found my spark wasn't blowing out on high boost at higher gapped plugs. Also, having since gone back to stock compression, i can run a .030 stock iridium plug at 12 psi, whereas before with 3mm i'd have to gap it closer to .018. at the same boost pressure.

I'm looking for different than stock coils if many people here have switched.

Stock coils, and KB BAS.

Easy to do, works great imo.

I was having spark cut-out at 25psi making 650whp on 93 octane plus 50/50 water/meth and this cured it.

Car idled better as well.

~$225 I think.

At what gap?

I would like to see the gap on my go back to 0.030" or larger.

LS Coils are probably your best bet, the issues you are refereing to have been ironed out.

It's still so odd that some people have absolutley no problems with this and then others are having so many problems making less power.

Yeah, I have yet to figure this one out also, but it does seem to be independent of the coils. I think it has something to do with the Voltage under load, or the Tune.

Or the fuel that they use. IIRC Kutsujula and Rob! both used Q16. I believe alcohol fuels are harder to ignite.

But whatever it is, its probably a bunch of different things that add up to the problem.

I'm running the Stock ones with cheap $2.00 NGK Spark plugs #7173 gapped @ .015" with ZERO problems!
