Default VORTECH S/C

Hi guys

I am about a week away from installing the s/c.
The tuner tells me that its quite neccesary to upgrade the clutch and install a lightened flywheel (moly - chromed to be specific).

Is it totaly necessary to do the above?

Exactly. It depends on the hp you're making and the dyno as well. But I can't see any scenario where you would "have" to change flywheels.

You definitely don't want to be paying a tuner or renting dyno time with a clutch that's slipping.

I've know people with Vortech who ran their car with their stock clutch for over 35K miles and never had a clutch problem. (Returned their car back to stock after 35K and still have the same clutch)

I think a lightweight flywheel compliments a SCer nicely and maybe he just meant might as well do the flywheel at the same time if you plan on upgrading the clutch. I saw a lot of threads about people who had bad luck quickly on a stock clutch and since I push my car rather hard I had the ACT clutch and Comptech flywheel installed before I installed the SCer. It has held great and would recommend it to anyone in my HP/TQ range.

if you decide to upgrade the clutch just remeber upgrade the flywheel too since the tranny will already be dropped.

No clutch upgrade necessary whatsoever. With an SC and a normal street start, you're not even boosting at that rpm range.

Unless you're going to be launching the crap out of your car or driving it aggressively all the time, the stock clutch will hold up just fine.

Thanks guys.

Well, the Vortech kit that I'm buying comes with an upgraded clutch. Its just the way my tuner sells it. No mention of the type of clutch though.

But heres the thing: he says for an extra 17 500 Rands, which is approximately 2000 dollars , he will supply and fit and even better clutch than the one that comes swith the S/C and a lightened chrome Moly flywheel.

I reckon thats way too much even considering that the parts would have to be imported from the states.

Down here in SA there arent many parts available for the S cuz there just aint that many S's around.

The 350Z is very popular here. The guys that do own S's are like one family.

an extra $2,000 is a heck of a lot to invest in a clutch and flywheel for a stock Vortech kit. I'd find out just what clutch comes with the vortech kit he sells.
