Default Vortech SC rattle

Hello,

I recently purchased a used S complete with Vortech SC.

From day one I have noticed a rattle sound coming from the SC during engine deceleration, around 3000 - 2000 rpms.

When I look at the SC while revving the engine there is noticable play in the drive pulley and shaft that seems to coincide with the rattle. The pulley slides in/out slightly, between 1 and 2 mm it appears. I spoke to Vortech and they tell me the play can be up to 1/8 inch and shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Does anyone out there have any idea what could be causing a rattle coming from the SC as described above?

Do you have an opinion on whether this is something to worry about?

I am very new to this so please keep that in mind.

Other than the rattle sound the car seems to be running fine. I get about 6.5 lbs of boast approaching 9k rpms.

Worried ..........

Learned something new today..

Is the noticable play more than 1/8th of an inch?

I messed around with it a little more and now notice the noise happens whether decelerating or not.

more importantly I notice this rattle is consistant when running at 2500 rpms

I am thinking of recording this sound so I can post a wav file.

the amount of play I see in the pulley seems to be less than 1/8 inch

How old is the SC? could be be bad bearings in the Snail. How about taking a pic of the engine bay?

Interesting,I too had or have this same problem.Mine was happening right around 2300rpm on decel or accelerating. It seemed worse when the engine was cold.I called vortech and they asked me about my belt tension and deemed it too loose.I tightened the belt and its much better but it still buzzes slightly when its cold but not at all when warmed up.My supercharger however has no apparent play in the shaft/pulley.

Could be the bearing. However, with Vortech and Comptech, there is a very distinct and discernable "gravelly" sound coming from the snail. I've found that this is quite normal and characteristic of these blowers.
If it is the bearing, you might be able to test it. One way is to listen to the blower casing near the pulley with a mechanics stethoscope. Also, with the engine OFF, see of you can grab the pulley and try to move it around. If it has any movement beyond a mm or two, your bearing is going.
