Default Vortech SCer question

A day or two ago I started smelling raw fuel from my 2001 s2k with a stock vortech kit. I saw a hose on the FMU was leaking a small amount of fuel. It got worse very fast. The person who put the metal clamp on, tightened it so much it cut through the hose basically.

I had to cut a small (about .5 inch) amount off of the fuel line and re-attach the hose using a slightly wider clamp to help prevent it from cutting into the rubber hose. I then tightened it, but not a lot.

Driving down the interstate....um....aggressively.....I heard a boom sound. Within moments I smelled a VERY strong gas odor and pulled over. About 10 gallons of gas was just dumped onto the interstate. Apparently I didn't tighten it enough for aggressive driving.

So.....you can't have it too tight.....or not tight enough....how on earth do you know how much to tighten it? Do you use any sealant to help it stay on? I tried looking for a sealant, but couldn't find one specifically for fuel lines and did not want to use anything that could damage it.

Basically I need to know how to tighten up that one hose. There are three lines going into the FMU. This is the bigger hose in the middle. Gas pours out of it when the engine is running so I'm assuming it puts the fuel into the FMU.

Please let me know if you need more details. I need some creative ideas.

Thanks!

maybe it was installed with the wrong size hoses then??? These hoses wouldn't hold on tight without the clamps. It didn't hold on tight even with the clamps I hate coming in here with such a simple problem...I mean come on...it's just a hose....but the car really seems to like having it attached correctly.

That could be the problem.... 5/32" is the vaccum hose, 1/4" is the fuel. 34" needed for fuel inlet, 28" needed for outlet, 28" needed for vaccum.

Hope that helps.

You might not have the right fuel tubing installed. Make sure you have "high pressure EFI" fuel tubing instead of standard fuel tubing. Your fuel pressure goes above 100psi when at full boost under WOT. When I had my FMU on the car it was impossible to pull the hoses off. I had to cut them off. It was that snug. Be careful.

Wow...okay so I've learned a few small but important details already. I looked at the parts list from Vortech. It says 1/4" fuel line and the hose on the car says 5/16". I have no idea why the wrong one was used instead, but obviously that's a problem. I ran to carquest and picked up a 1/2" wide clamp and that seems to hold it REALLY well, but I'll test it out tonight and find out. Will the tubing say high pressure fuel line on it or something to indicate it is for high pressure? I couldn't find any such marking.

You need to have EFI high pressure rated hose, it will be written on the outside of the hose. If It doesn't say EFI, It's not a high pressure hose.

Okay thats probably what's going on. I drove it home from work and no leaks. I decided to take a chance and fill up with gas again and still no leaks. I'll check the hose in the morning to see if it says that. If not I'll replace the hose ASAP. If it is a high pressure hose I'll either wait to see if this clamp holds or I'll swap to the smaller correct size hose.

When you go buy hose from a parts store they should ask you if its for electronic fuel injection (EFI).

Just replace the hose and do it right.
