What is the purpose of the breather?
How often do you have to replace it?
Mine is really dirty.

You need to be more descriptive but I'm going to guess you're talking about this:

This filters the air before it goes into the airpump. Since that's where it gets air on the stock car, it needs filtered air when the kit is put on. It can't take air from the same place as it did when the car was NA because now, that air supply is boosted.
If it starts to look too dirty, take it out and clean it.

I think both of those breather filters are washable and re-usable. Just soak them in varsol, then rinse them out with warm water, then pour some methy hydrate on them and let dry by shaking and sitting for a couple of hours.

If you must replace the orange one, I believe that it's just a filter that used to go inside air cleaner boxes to trap some of the oil coming from the PCV valve line, so try an autoparts store and match it to the size of hole.

That other filter you show is the front valve cover breather. Air can go into the valve cover to help equalize pressure within and oily air can come out for the same reason. That one you show is just a miniature version of a K&N type - re-useable. You don't really need to do anything with them unless they get REALLY dirty. Very little air transfer goes through that one on the valve cover and the air movement through the orange one is small and limited to a few seconds to a few minutes after each engine start.

XViper,

I have a vortech but can't remember that I ever saw that piece? Can you describe or even show another picture where I need to look for it?

TIA,

Andreas

You should find this below the coolant reservoir tank, down low, behind the radiator, just next to the lower rad hose.
Start looking here:

Note that I may have 2 things different in this picture from yours.
1. My BOV filter is on top. Yours may be mounted below.
2. That thing that has "MO......." on it is my Moroso catch can. You won't have this.
Now, from the same angle, just move closer:

Is that orange filter what you get with the vortech kit? That is just a breather element from, I don't know pretty much any car from the 80's/early 90's!
