Default What is "normal" oil use?

First, I have searched and searched and really have nothing.

I'm new to FI (SOS Stage 1 kit). My car got decent usage when NA (never logged, I just never had to add it much between changes). Car runs great...it makes better than average power, and idles well, though cold starting is a little rough (starter was diagnosed bad...will replace with clutch). It doesn't have white/blue smoke or a really bad smell, but it will puff a light semi-brownish smoke very briefly around 8K RPM (but I think the car always did that).

I'm now getting between 800-1300 miles per quart, depending on many conditions. There doesn't seem to be much appreciable difference between Mobil1 and Castrol Edge, either (although the latter SEEMS to be less). Also, I notice the use is a good bit higher on the highway where I'm doing 4000RPM for hours.

I am not running any kind of crank vent/filter or catch can. I'm thinking that my issues are likely "blow by", esp on the highway as the vacuum generated before the impeller at 4K engine RPM is probably quite substantial and at WOT with the PCV shut, the impeller is REALLY drawing a vacuum. In city driving, use seems to be around 1200-1300 miles/qt, and around 800 on the highway. My dipstick never pops, either, so the valve cover isn't under high pressure.

Should I invest in a catch solution or just get a vent? Will the latter just spray oil mist everywhere or should a filter catch it, and will the pressure build up since the vacuum is now gone under boost? I think the Saiko Michi is the most interesting solution. I think one of the solutions that relocates the cruise is best, but I don't think it'll fit with my aftercooler.

I use/lose no oil now that my oil leak is fixed.

No catch can. The front port of valve cover is left open, and so is the pcv port.

Dfw, I like that quote. Im thinking the same thing sometimes when I see some of the fenders here in the Midwest.

My ap2 burn, uses no oil. In the 1500 miles I've had the Sc, there is barely any oil in the intake tube where I have the vent tub going to from the valve cover.

Change to regular oil for your next oil change. Then switch over to redline/royal purple. I had horrible oil burning issues with Mobil1 oil.

Never burned/used any oil when I was turbocharged. Always used castrol edge.

Thanks for the feedback all. I ordered a crankcase vent filter from Amazon for $12 and I'll see what that does. I think AP2 folks don't have the issues due to the block changes as well as the baffles in the valve cover and re-arranged PCV valve.

Even if my usage is high, it's a 10 year old car making ~370 crank horsepower...I can live with it I do think I can do something to bring it down as I don't think it's shot rings...or at least not shot compression rings.

Never use royal purple. You would have better luck with regular oil.

Why wouldn't you use royal purple? Genuinely asking since ive been usig royal purple for the last 2 years. I switched from mobil 1 bc of oil consumption issues as well.

Interesting. Typically oil burning comes from rings. The rings get filled with "gunk" and need to be freed of that. Sometimes changing oil brands help to remove the stuck on deposits on the rings. Also, on F20s they are known to burn because teh valve guides go bad. The guides are not long enough and the valves start to wiggle, leading to oil coming down through the guide into the combustion chamber.

Some people beleive in the supra PCV filter, but I do not. For a long time I ran an additional PCV valve between the factory 90 degree PCV. I used an ITR valve from a motor swap I did years ago. I didnt seem to have any more oil burning. But the biggest factor was running/changing oil brands on regular occasion.
