At what point do I need engine management?

Default At what point do I need engine management?

I'm getting my Vortech installed soon and to my understanding the FMU is sufficient for a Stock S2k running the kit. My question is when it becomes necessary to get another form of engine management?

After cat back?
Exhaust?
New Pulley?
etc.

Thanks!

Nate

Most of us use the new smaller pulley as the changer over point. If the dyno shows need for engine management that also is a good point to change over.

Id say anything other than stock will require proper engine management. This is why my s2k is still stock(other than the supercharger).

Just buy an EMS now. It's worth it.

I'm considering it, although I really don't plan on modding much more (notice I said 'plan', lol). I figured at the most a smaller pulley. Would a smaller pulley call for an AEM standalone type solution? Or would an emanage type soluton suffice?

Anything over 7-8 psi.
You will start to run out of fuel with the stock injectors as you add more boost.

It is always a good idea. You can maximize the potential gains from any mods that you do. Otherwise you could spend $3-5K in bolt-ons and never see the optimal benefit.

For a car that is driven aggressively on the street, tracked or raced, it is almost an added measure of safety and peace of mind.

Don't forget, that the tune is only going to be as good as the tuner.

So what is the most common upgrade without major modification? I'm assuming a smaller pulley and larger injectors along with engine management would yield a decent gain, but what is the point where people start switching out internals and such?

I skipped the vortech FMU & black box set up and went straight to EMS.

A stock Vortech kit will give you about 300 hp, my stock vortech kit, with injectors and EMS 1052U gave me 355hp.

I think enthrilled and I are getting simular numbers with simular mods.

Pulley, injectors, ECU- good for 10-12 psi.

Want more boost?
-Built short block
-Headwork
-Headgasket
-Header/Exhaust
