Thumbs up Where's your Modifry shift beeper located?

I have the latest version of Modifry's shift beeper.............. installed under the dash on passenger's side. Worked great this whole past year while N/A. Now with turbo (thanks InlinePro ) I can't hear the damn thing............. even with top up.

Yes, it is still working.... on occasion I hear it, but most of the time too much mechanical noise. Obviously putting it closer to the driver's ear is the route to go, but the speaker itself doesn't have any type of enclosure.

Interested in where you guys have (re)located yours to.

thanks,
Mark

Have you ever thought about going with a shift light. I have one and it works great. I've installed the shift beeper before and there is no way that I would ever be able to hear that thing in my car, but maybe you could replace that tiny speaker with a larger one.

Is there any way to connect it up to the car's sound system?

I'm just amazed that all the forced induction noise there is now, but I have to think back to N/A days when I could clearly hear every beep that things was making............. and I had my same (HKS) exhaust then as well. Not complaining in any way whatsoever - FI sounds are music to me.

I'll have to check the specs on the speaker, go to a place like Radio Shack and see if they have one of same frequency but more dB's (without too much current draw).

I like the beeper over a light because it progressively gives you several (adjustable) 'warning' beeps before the final solid 'shift tone'.

What light did you go with?

I just bought an autometer pro-shift light. It comes with the 200rpm pills that tell it when to come on. All I know is that I set it for 8800rpm and by the time I react to the light and shift its a perfect shift at redline. BTW, I also use to have an HKS exhaust when I first went turbo from when I was NA, and I was so suprised by how it sounded almost stock with the turbo. I knew that the turbo would muffle the sound of the exhaust, but never thought it would make it so quiet. Long story short, I swapped it out for a 3" single that makes plenty of noise.

Just a thought -

You could cut and splice the hot and ground to the beeper and run wire up to the driver's side headrest. I have no idea how difficult it would be or how to best run the wire. But if it's behind the seat it shouldn't be very noticable.

Let us know what you work out.

thanks for the info on the light - I'll look it up on the Web.

Reading threads on S2KI, 'everyone' who went turbo has said their exhaust sounded much quieter. Strangely (or not so, not sure), my HKS (when under heavy load) still sounds quite loud with the turbo. Just how loud, was easiest to hear when the car was on the dyno. While driving, I think the exhaust may appear to sound substantially quieter to some, but I'm thinking that's due to the increase in other mechanical noises being heard from the turbo, BOV, etc. In any event, the exhaust is limiting my hp/tq, and I may go the single 3" route, as you have....... requires a re-tune though or else I'll be running too lean.

raymo19: That's what I've been thinking.................... first get it nearer to the drivers ear w/o it being visible, leaving enough wire in case it needs to be mounted up higher, closer to the head.

Mine is right behind the drivers seat. It's not hard to do and I can definately hear it now, although my car isn't all that loud. Not to hijack, but I'm interested in what settings you have yours at. I've got mine set at 8000, 8300, 8600, 8900 but I'm still playing with it.

*Edit- Just saw your running 18psi with 4.77's, YIKES! With that kinda power I'd have to set the thing at 4000 to get my shifts off before redline.

I have a pretty big shift light made by Proform which has an adjustable rpm dial. I set mine to 8700 to account for delay reaction. To me that's better than the beeper. As soon as the light blinds me, i shift.

I believe mine is set at at 8300, 8500, 8700, and 8900................. but I set that up prior to FI; I will spread them out wider, as you have done.

4.77's with FI *was* fun.............. always rowing through the gears.......but looking forward to more usable power delivery with 4.08's from a 300ZX rear.

BTW, what path did you take in routing your wires from dash to behind the seat?
