Default Is your turbo setup relaible?

The question is this. How many problems have you guys had out of your turbo setups? I keep hearing the two opposites on how they are reliable for daily use, and then I hear how much of a pain they are. So im confused, If somthing has gone wrong on your turbo setup, please list what it was. I plan on turboing my car in the near future and want to make sure this is safe since this is my daily driver.

Thanks in advance!
David

I daily drive my turbo setup, but to get it problem free took me almost a year to work out every bug as along the way new problems would develop. Getting it to be totally reliable is a huge PITA, or at least it was for me. If you don't like to work on your car then stay away from it, but if you don't mind putting the time in to get it setup right then you'll be good to go after a few bottles of asprin.

think the quesion lies on how much knowledge you have on turbos. If not too much i would stick with a supercharger. If you get some1 to install it and then it turns to a problem then and you dont know how to fix it.. its gonna cost. I think supercharge is more liable. but MOST these guy in FI know a lot about it and sure safe the route. i dont know that much and had some trouble. GL with it though

Vbands on EVERYTHING and good tuning go a LONG way to making things reliable. Proper planning before installing the kit and then extreme care during the install and good tuning afterwards are critical. You should also double check EVERYTHING after your first drive, second drive, first week, and first month. I prefer v-banded wastegates, turbine outlets, and full exhaust systems because they are easier to assemble and there are never any bolts to back out or gaskets to leak.

There are a lot of things that contribute to unreliability. Bolts on the turbo manifold/turbine housing/wastegate tend to back off. Tubular manifolds can crack. Worm drive hose clamps can break and come off. Cheap intercoolers can warp and leak. Your bad tuning can blow up your motor. The heat from the turbo can set the car on fire (I'm NOT joking).

I have had both VERY unreliable setups and very reliable and virtually indestructible setups. The differences between them are usually very small and may even seem insignificant until the problems start occurring.

To be totally honest, I haven't really done anything out of the ordinary. I just tried to install everything right the first time around, but it just took some time to work all of the problems out so that it would be rattle and vibration free where things would stop breaking. After sorthing out everything mechanically, and I got the tune set properly it was fine for daily driving. I just do routine maitenance now and its fine for everyday use.
