How do i convert a psd to .ai ?
A PSD is a rastor file, and AI is vector. You can't really 'convert' them, necessarily.
However, Adobe has a program called Streamline that does its best at guessing where lines and vectors are in a rastorized file and creates a vector file for you.

streamline will work, but i use flash mx to convert my rasters to vector, it does a pretty good job and is an easier app to get hold of nowadays.
if you are not concerned with maintaining a vector format, you can just open your psd, copy the image and paste it into illustrator, you will not have any vectors, but the image will be in illustrator for whatever you want to do with it.
why may i ask do you want to do this, it works out better if you go the other way around from ai to psd.

Yeah i have photochop CS but i am not good with it. I dont really understand vectors and rastors, but nm
So, if i emailed a psd to one of you wizards, you could make it a ai and email it back huh?

i'll give you the crash course:
raster file = photoshop = composed of pixels, x amount of little colored boxes. the more pixels, the better potential quality of a picture.
vector = illustrator = coordinates of points used to map out a shape. not made of pixels so i could take a small vector file such as a logo that is .5" x .5" and scale it to 100' x 100' with no quality loss. or unlimited scaling for that matter.
nevertheless, post the image here and well see if it is worth converting.

I guess the first question should be: Why?
I ask this because if you're not familiar with the difference between raster and vector then perhaps you don't need to.
On thinking about it I am guessing the reason you want to do this is for either engraving or embroidering. How'd I do?
If it's either of those then you really need to manually trace over the image to get the detail you need without all the subtle tones and changes. I just did a Scotish 'Rampant Lion' for my cousin's Mini. He has the graphic on his rook and wants similar on his shift knob.

Yes, it is to put on merchandise, and for some merchandise the supplier needs an ai file, ie a vector one. I don't know all of this stuff so appreciate your help.
