Those look beautiful.

Regarding imaging a hot engine bay - digital cameras can only see into the near infra-red, usually the 750nm to 1000nm range from what I've read. To see something like engine heat, you need to image the FAR infra-red spectrum of 10,000 to 100,000 nm - which requires stuff like liquid nitrogen cooled imagers.

So you can use digital camers to take a picture of your hot electric stove JUST BEFORE it starts to glow in the visible spectrum, but that's it. So glowing hot headers will work, but typical temps from coolant won't.

Poindexter, does your camera come with an internal IR filter you had to take out?

Nope - just throw the filter on and pick ND's as per how much light is around. Best IR photos come out in the morning and late afternoon with the sun behind you. I took these around 7:00 PM yesterday.

IR works okay indoors too - just be sure to turn most lights off.
