Thanks all,
The camera is nothing spectacular, a Canon S30. I like it for it's compactness since I use it on my motorcycle too so a self enclosing lens cover was a must. As for technique, I really just do it on the fly and just try to compose and select the right exposure settings.
If people want to pool up money for a Nikon 5000, I'll show up to all the local Bay Area events and photograph them for ya guys.
