Like many people have mentioned already, function over form, buddy. The dirt has been carefully layered to produce the lowest possible drag coefficient and optimal weight distribution. This guy is all business.

By the way, that Miata is nuts.

I had to drive my s2k in the snow
The diffuser works great compared to the j's
It does not hold in any rocks ! woot

For the many j's racing rear diffuser owners, you all know it picks up an extra 5-9lbs of dirt and rocks

ok. OP i applaud your efforts and from a fabrication point of view i dig it, but there is a lot lacking in this design that will keep it from being very effective.

im really not trying to sound like a dick but this thread is full of people that know little to nothing about aerodynamics.

a few things i would like to point out, some one posted a link to all of mcbeaths aerobytes articles as well as competition car downforce and racecar aerodynamics. i suspect you didnt really get too wrapped up in the books or you would be posting them as a way of showing the OP how he should have done it rather than defending the OP's design with the books.

additionally i think it's equally awesome how someone from aj power suggests that it should be wind tunnel tested to prove that it works. lol. as if 99% of the jdm bling parts that they sell are wind tunnel tested unless by wind tunnel tested you mean that some one designs a part based on misguided assumption and then they take it to a wind tunnel and go "hmm, according to the wind tunnel this part doesnt work very well. no matter. stupid americans will buy anything" :-)

seriously though most of the jdm aero stuff is more stylized with a hint of unoptimised functionality rather than truely and purely functional like everyone likes to tell themselves. i could go on about this all day and point out specific problems with most of the diffusors and wings sold by the prominent japanese companies but i'll save my breath and simply invite anyone to show my one example of a real race car that possesses the stylistic cues that the jdm bling parts have. just one example that beyond sharing the trait of having a rearward slope and a few strakes, is like any of these.

to be perfectly clear, my problem with these parts and the op's diffusor as well is not that they wont do anything, it;s that they are totally guessed at and many of the design cues are based on style than actual ability to produce a desired function.

i got the impression that the guy from aj power made that comment to imply that the op's diffusor isnt as 'dialed in" as the awesome stuff that he sells. maybe im mistaken, but that's the impression i got. if that is the case then that really boils my blood.

again, im really not trying to be an a hole or i would be considerably more specific. i am simply saying that those that are 100% in favor of this thing and are defending it's functionality really are off base.

but i'm sure everyone is going to get all pissed off now and force me to be a dick and point out specific design flaws.

Even if noone is pissed off feel free to share your aerodynamic knowledge so that future DIYers may design better and more functional diffuser.
