Default My "new" exhaust...

Ever since seeing silverstonerob's car I have been wanting to clean up my stock exhaust. It was covered in carbon buildup and the factory black coating was cracking and overall looked terrible.

After a can of aircraft cleaner, alot of brillo pads, alot of steel wool, and about 3 hours this was the finished product.

I could not be happier with the finished project. It is not as flashy as a shiny big single but the whole process cost me less than $20 and several hours of my time. Well worth it for someone who can't justify the purchase of a new exhaust for pure aesthetics (and the minimal gains).

so, if i use some sort of solvent material plus green scrubbies and finish off with steel wool my nasty oem exhaust will be nice again? is there a danger of this getting rusted? this isn't going to remove a protective finish or anything, right?

You're pretty much going to have to use aircraft remover. You use the coarse steel wool on the cans and brillo pads on the faces. Once I got it done I went over it all with lacquer thinner then with a solvent remover. After that I put on two coats of high temp clear coat, which should protect it and make it much easier to keep clean.
