I also have a d5000 somewhere in the house.
I use the AE Bracketing feature and then edit in lightroom, then i compile the exposure sets with photomatix and edit some more with photoshop. As for the camera settings...i cannot remember other than i was in manual shooting mode with manual focus using a tripod.
