^^^ where the piping of the egg sauce passes over the diffuser.....i trimmed about 1/4 inch where the piping rubbed against the diffuser...i probably could have done no trimming and i would have been fine....but as much as the exhaust vibrates on start up or just in general....i wanted that clearance. i hope this helps

It didn't require bracket modification for me, because my exhaust didn't hit it. Different exhaust, different issues. Diffuser was designed with a few exhausts in mind.
it shouldn't be flush, it sits off the bumper approx 1/4 inch, but the rear most part in the center will be press against the stock exhaust cap firmly.
are you using all 4 of the supplied brackets?
especially the 2 outer brackets (look like ] and [ ....you needed to drill into trunk for these)
Also, keep in mind that along the bottom of the left/right side of the rear bumper is not going to be perfectly aligned, since the diffuser is angled straight and the bumper has a slight curve to it. I plan on taking some 1/4" round bar and making my own bumper support to push the bottom corner of the rear bumper out so you don't see this "slight misalignment" on the sides. I have seen some people here on the forum install modified GP Sports Rear Bumper pieces which also do well to hide the "small gap"
also i had to give a little Dremel love on one of holes that hold the diffuser, was a 3/16 off. you dont see it behind the exterior washer/hex nut.
Now understand this my first diffuser install...so others my have had a different install experience than me. I am satisfied with how it looks, so i am assuming that mine is installed correctly(a very scientific calculation), of course taking consideration for the known "gap on the sides"....every J's diffuser owner has it.
