It has more to do with checking for fractures and stress cracks in the chassis. Most race cars, DTM, NASCARS, ALMS, SPEED GT and Touring, are painted a grey or another light color. Thats from the mouth of a shock engineer on the Tri Point Mazda in the Speed Touring series.
