photography help
well guys i have been asked by another board member to take a picture for him. i have a finepix S7000 so it is a very good camera but i cant quite get the appature right.....
unfortunatly the lighting quality isn't very good, what appature settings would i need for a close up shot that is clear.
the picture i will be taking is of the start button, so you can see my problems...
anyhelp would be great...
thanks very much

If the lighting is poor then you will need a larger aperature.... f/2.5 - f/4. Remember that when you use a large aperature that your depth of field is reduced drastically so your plane of focus must be precise.
If you want a larger depth of field then you will need to use a smaller aperature such as f/22 but I recommend that you use a tripod to hold the camera steady on either choice.

^ What he said. Your best advice would be to use a tripod. Put the camera into Aperture Priority mode, set the aperture according SIIK2NR's advice, depending on the shot you want and let the camera determine your shutter speed. If you're in low light the shutter speed will be slow so a tripod or steady surface will be a must.
SIIK2NR mentioned depth of field. A large aperture like f/2.5 or f/4 gives you a small depth of field. Basically what you are focused on will be in focus, but objects further away from thay point will be blurred. The smaller your aperture (bigger number), the bigger depth of field.. more things in focus away from your focal point. Depth of field has a more pronounced effect when you zoom in (telephoto). Large aperture = lets in more light

i must say, you would need a pretty compact tripod to fit into the corner where the S2000 start button is.

I was going through some of my photography books when I came across this chart and thought this might help you a little Adam.
It is a chart for working in low light places, but I've used it a few times as a starting point on some macro shots.
I think it could help you too.

I know it is difficult to read - I tried to scan it bigger, but my scanner is a POS. The chart was also designed with film in mind, so you may have to make some minor adjustments to compensate for digital.
Hope it helps

^^^ thanks..
i must admit though... taking pictures is allot harder than i originally thought...
once i get better though the 12M pixel quality of the pictures will look great.
also the camera is a dream, its video capture is amazing, and so are some of the pictures it can take (i lent it to a friend for his art project).
hopfully i can get some nice pics of my S and show you guys
