I used to feel the same way about having more acreage on a larger home floor plan....until I owned one.

My wife and I are actually up on one year's of ownership on our home. Because of the population density and the cost of living in the Chicago area, and near suburbs, we opted to buy a bit further out to get the larger house and more yardage.

A year out, we are a bit tired of having to constantly clean and maintain. The larger yard is definitely a nice to have, however, it eats up all our free time in tending to it. Our dog loves it though.

We are very social people, and love to have our weekends to ourselves or to our family and friends, doing yardwork and cleaning is just not what we bargained for.

Our house is currently on the market, and we will be moving closer to the city, with less living space, and an association that takes care of the exterior. A 5 bedroon, 3 full bath, full gourmet kitchen, plus a den was just too much for us to handle. Now we are looking for a 3+ bedroom, 2.5+ bath type of townhome.

If we ever move into another large house, I won't look as favorably to yardage, especially if I'm near the city. It's just too expensive and too time consuming to manage.

Luder94,

Does your wife or you stay home all the time (ie, was she a "home-maker" or does just one of you work)? Just curious. My wife will be once she has our first child (June of this year), so staying at home and taking care of things would be pretty much fine with us. I guess that's why I say it so easily. Such liberty I have - just let the wife do everything!

I grew up in a pretty big home - about 4600 sq. ft. - and it had a HUGE lawn, plus all kinds of trees and shrubs. That thing took about three hours just to mow, not counting raking and whatnot. I'm used to it, so I guess I wouldn't mind it again. My dad, on the other hand, now lives in a place where they mow your lawn AND shovel the snow off your driveway in the winter. Lucky (but lazy) dog.

Sounds like you have a nice place there, though. Too bad it didn't work out.

P.S. We also don't want a huge lawn, but rather trees all around, which require very little maintenance (if it's forest). Just the edges, really. That makes it easier to keep things looking good (and natural).

Nope,

both the wife and I have Master's degrees; however, she's the one using hers for personal welfare...she gratified in knowing that she actually helps a segment of the population with her services (she's a sexual abuse counselor/therapist).

I, on the other hand, got a Master's in Physical Therapy with hopes to work in Sports Therapy arena. I went this route to truly be some sort of a care giver to the population, unfortunately, my undergrad was in Comp. Sci. and all the jobs that paid were in that field.

As far as it working out, if we don't get the price we're looking for, we're staying put. Maybe this coming summer, the wife will allow me to just hire some help.
