the kit that I had was the first version they released and had a converable top which wasn't smooth and had dips in it for the tops under-structure

I had to slowly sand that top smooth so it looked like an attached metal top
in the end I actually sanded the front so thin that it split and I had to glue it and sand the bead down

I think a year or two later Tamiya released another S with a hard top
