Its for winter rubber, and it is functional (wider is better)
I see no problem rocking those in the snow.
I see a huge problem. If and when he hits a pothole he will damage his front and rear fenders to the point of repair and an over $500+ pricetag to fix this damage. Not smart in my book on top of I have lived in Alaska for 3 years and would rather drive a FWD or AWD car over a RWD car... Have you ever driven on black ice?
Actually, narrow tires are better for snow not wider ones. Narrow tires CUT through snow to achieve better traction. And snow tires treads are more aggressive to get any traction at all. Wider tires would float on top of the snow because of the width. Think the difference between a snow tube and a pair of ski's. Ski's cut through the snow, narrow and controlled. A snow tube sits on top, wide and no control.
