not for the key to work no. you could relocate and add possibly another release button which could be pointless if the original one is failing

You could run a steel cable from inside the gas lid next to the filler to the latch assembly as a back up.

I've never had any trouble with mine. The only time it doesn't work is when the battery is dead, but then again, I removed the soft top so technically it would be easier to get into the trunk and pull the manual release.

worst case, you would pull the tray under the soft top, you could get to the cable that way. a local needed to do that here..

if u put the keyhole cover can u just pop that and use key if need be? or you can just relocate the cylinder?

^the keyhole cover pops right out if you pull at it. the shave trunk though looks much cleaner because you eliminate the emblem also
