Wake The Devil 2011
I found inspiration in the popular Wake the Dragon event. I wanted something comparable to build as an event here in AZ where we manage to regularly have meets of 40+ cars. After many hours of research and planning for a 3 day trip I came across the Devil's Highway (Old HWY 666) which was renamed HWY 191 because of peoples superstitions and bad rep that the road got. Here is a little exert from a website, "Route 666 rides the rugged eastern seam of Arizona from the Petrified Forest, south, across the Zuni River, through the Apache National Forest, and into the mountain mining towns of Clifton and Morenci. Unlike the straightforward, gentle passage of retired Route 66 ("America's Highway"), U.S. 666, its descendant, is tortuous, wild, and as strange as its name. In little more than one hundred miles, the surrounding altitude ranges from twenty-nine hundred feet to more than eleven thousand feet. With some four hundred twisting curves in one sixty-mile stretch, the road has sent more than its share of travelers crashing off cliffs. The Federal Highway Administration considers this drive to be the curviest road in the nation. There are nearly 450 switchbacks, (many marked at 10 mph) along the route. "
We met last Friday at SOS (Science of Speed) for a meet and great and SOS provided a lunch for us. All total we drove about 750miles in 3 days. Expereienced elevation swings of 6,000 ft and temperature changes of over 30 degrees. The meet was a HUGE success and I have already started planning 2 events in 2011
