Post AP2 Cupholder Sliding Cover Rattle

Getting through my first PNW winter in the S, and one thing that I noticed over the last few months is that the cupholder door button is extremely hard to press down when it's cold out. Additionally, when it is open, it takes so much more force to shut the door back into the button slot.
Recently I've noticed that there is now some play when the sliding door is closed (can wiggle away and towards the button just very slightly), and it's by far the most annoying and loud rattle I've heard in the car.
Anyone experience this and/or know to deal with this? I'd like to say the play was not there when I bought the car back in December.

The sliding cover over the cup holders in the 2004+ cars is typically full of dried, sticky Coke (pop or soda) that's been spilled there over the past 20 years. Solution is to pop out the console and clean it. Several notes and photos here how to do it. Just takes hand tools and patience. Parts are usually available. Color depends on model year.
