Default Airbag On/Off Switch Installation

(If someone can host a pdf I have one with pictures for easy printout)

S2000 AOI Airbag On/Off Switch Installation
(Passenger Side)

***DISCLAIMER***
As with all instructional “how-tos” (but maybe more so than others), this is merely my experience and a rough guide of how I did it. Any problems arising from your installation is your problem. Accomplish this at your own risk!!! Follow official AOI Electrical instructions and the Honda S2000 Service Manual. This DIY is my non-professional experience and should only be used as a supplementary guide not official literature.

Step One: Decide whether you want to do this yourself or not

Read this DIY entirely through as well as official AOI Electrical instructions and referenced portions of the Honda S2000 service manual first. You’re about to screw with your cars safety system. An airbag could blow up in your face or fail to perform its duty in an accident! Think about this liability FIRST and FOREMOST!
-An authorized installer will usually charge between $400-600 including the cost of the switch. Contact AOI Electrical for a local installer. They will not sell you the switch direct.
-You need NHTSA approval to make this modification legal. Otherwise consider this off road use only. The request form can be found here:
http://www.safercar.gov/staticfiles/...noffswitch.pdf

Step Two: Buy a AOI Airbag On/Off switch.
-Easier said than done. I found mine on eBay from a business liquidator for $30.
-Another source for $120 (as of 4/1/2011):
http://www.electronix.com/universal-...h-p-20433.html

Step Three: Follow the service manual for Passenger Airbag replacement pg 23-67

In a nutshell…
-Disconnect the negative battery cable for MORE than three minutes (I left it for an hour). There are capacitors in the SRS system that need to discharge.
-Remove the passenger dashboard cover. It pops off with 5 clips (four corners and top center) Be careful! Mine cracked the top portion getting it off.
-Remove the yellow SRS connector from its plastic restraining clip. (Pic 1)

-Disconnect yellow SRS connector (Pic 2)

Step Four: Follow AOI instructions
www.electronix.com/images/lotus-461.pdf
My instructions should be supplementary to the official instructions. Again - ALL liability is on you!!! I take no responsibility if I misrepresented the AOI instructions.
-All work happens from the wire/connector coming from the center console. There is not much room for working or error.
-Cut ONE of the wires before the connector and strip each end (1/4 inch or so). It does not matter which wire you cut.
-Attach two of the supplied connectors to each stripped end.
-Strip a small (1/4 inch or so) portion of the other wire. DO NOT CUT IT!!!
-Insert stripped section of the wire into the last supplied connector. (Pic 3)

-Connect all of the connectors you just installed to the appropriate ones from the switch. Cut wires go to yellow and white switch wires (does not matter which). Green wire from switch goes the the stripped wire. I then electrical taped the H out of the connectors to ensure they’d stay.
-Reconnect the yellow SRS connector and put it back in it’s holder. Your completed bundle should look like Pic 4.

-Connect the black LED ground wire to an appropriate ground. I used a grounding cluster on the passenger side wall. Look up and to the right inside the removed panels opening. (Pic 5)

-Connect the red LED power wire to an always on or switched power wire. I used the switched power wire for the stereo. Cut the red wire and install the included fuse holder and fuse within 10 inches of where you made the power connection. (Pic 6)

Step Five: The moment of truth!

-Double/Triple/Quadr… check all connections.
-Reconnect negative battery cable.
-If you connected the LED red power cable to an always on source it should be lit. If it’s not, you know there is an issue with how you wired the LED. If not go back to step three. The LED power is independent of whether the switch is actually working. It’s simply power for the LED only but must be connected to be NHTSA legal.
-Insert key. Slide your seat back ALL the way ( ) turn the key to the on position. If you installed the red LED power wire to a “switched” source an LED should come on. If not go back to step three. The LED power is independent of whether the switch is actually working. It’s simply power for the LED only but must be connected to be NHTSA legal.
-If all is well bundle and zip tie the excess wire and replace the passenger dash panel.
-Use the supplied 3M tape to stick the switch to the dash. (Pic 7) Per NHTSA rules the switch must be installed in a visible location to be able to view the LED status.

Congrats if all went well!!!

(sorry if it didn’t – see disclaimer)

Please PM me if you'd like a printable PDF.

Also, I do not work for or have any association with the above link for purchasing the switch. I came across it on a Lotus forum.

I have little kids that can now enjoy safely riding in the S since I can turn off the bag. No one will be denied NHTSA approval by the way - the form is simply a formality. There's nothing stating you can't install it yourself either.

The kit is still for sale on eBay as of 07-22-11. I can't speak for the quality yet (haven't received my kit) but the ordering experience was amazing. Within 75 minutes of ordering the kit I have received an email from eBay and the seller letting me know my order had already shipped. I am scheduled to get in on Tuesday already! I will try to document the build with pics and keep you guys posted.

The little guy's first birthday is Saturday August 6th and I plan on taking him for his first cruise to Pittsburgh Cars and Coffee!

Installed mine last week with a buddy and it took us less than an hour and we took our time. Very easy mod. Thanks!

Just noticed that the PDF that needs to be filled out and mailed to the NHTSA has an expiration date. I am still filling mine out but just in case go here for more info:
