Not sure about this harness extension thing. I literally converted my front end to AP2 and all I did was swap the parts over, I did nothing else.

you should definitely convert to AP2 ballast since the opening at the bottom of the headlight is different from ap1 to ap2. Ap2 has a round opening and ap1 has a square opening. The ballasts are completely different sizes and putting an ap1 ballast into an ap2 headlight will not be an option.

Also AP2 ballasts are way more reliable than ap1 ballasts. Further, ap2 OEM reman ballasts exist on amazon and ebay for very cheap. I have yet to find a AP1 reman ballast.

I also found the plug separately. But its only a couple bucks more to get the whole ballast and plug.

Is this the right "extension" you guys are talking about?

you need the Ebay one. NOT THE AMAZON ONE. the amazon one is the just the pigtail from the ballast to the bulb. if you buy a ballast and ignitor from ebay it will bolt right up.

alternative you can disassemble the red and black 1/4 turn D2s connector and route it through the ap2 lights and use your Ap1 stuff. but as others have said, it will not be sealed properly.

Sorry for the late reply guys, the headlight may already have the extension but if not it is PN 33147-2SA-A11. It is just a two wire male/female plug about 20" long. My AP2 lights only had one harness when I bought them.

Cheers!

Ok, so I am going to be adding ap2 headlights to my 02 ap1. I am keeping my ap1 bumper.
I have a set of ap2 headlights used but low mileage and in great shape with all the bulbs, ballast, igniters etc. included. However, there is no "harness extension" included.
Before I dive in - I want to be sure I have what I need to finish the job.
I am getting mixed messages from this thread about the need for a "harness extension." What is this part needed for? Does the ap1 harness not reach the ap2 headlight plug or something? If it does not reach - and if I don't have the extensions - is there a way to make it fit, or not??? Fernando - did you encounter any problem getting the oem ap1 harness to reach the plug in?

Can you snap a pic of the housing/ballast? I can let you know if the extension is there or not, it is part of the assembly but one of my lights had one missing.

Found this picture and figured it would allow you to see the harness extension best. It is the red/black wire that plugs into the ballast and feeds under the ballast which exits facing upward on the rear of the housing behind the HID cover. The red markup in the photo was there, please ignore it.

I'll pull my lights out of the packing material in the AM and see if that wire is there. I understand you are referring to the red/black wire that looks to be plugged into the ballast on the top right of your pic? Does the other end plug into the car's wire harness? Is it a situation where the ap1 car wiring won't reach the ap2 ballast? Or the plug on the ap1 car harness is different than the plug on the ap2 ballast?
Assuming its not there - am I SOL?

EDIT - I just took a look at the ap2 headlights I purchased recently - like the picture shows above, there is a two wire red/black wire pigtail that has one end clipped into the underside of the ballast. The picture above shows the headlight upside down. The wire runs from the underside of the ballast, through plastic wire routing tabs located on the headlight body, and around to the back cover of the projector lens, where it is attached with a plastic routing tab and then ends with a female connector. I can't confirm this without having the car apart, but it appears as though the female connector at the end of the pigtail, by the back of the projector lens, is intended to receive a wire from the vehicle harness. Is this the "harness extension" you are referring to Hfreak? Or, do I need something else?

I bought some complete AP2 headlights from a wreck and plugged them directly into my AP1. 100% plug and play.
