Default Custom Intake Build

As a designer and engineer who attended NC State University, I ALWAYS enjoy building simple things for my vehicles. I just thought I would share with you guys and give some ideas as well as share some experiences I have had while going through prototypes. Seven has always been my lucky number and my nick name for the longest time, hence "Concept Se7en" as the brand lol. K&N Filter being used.

Any who, here's how she sat with the stock air box:

Air box removed. Measurements made, and designs rendered. Made a couple different cardboard templates to visualize the box. I used Lexan for the box as it is bendable yet strong. Plexiglass would shatter.

After the first day of prototyping, I had not fully finished the first one but I wanted to see the difference in Intake Air Temps (IAT) and how it sounded

Without any insulation inside the box and pulling in air from the radiator, the temps were sky high! Next day after work I head back to the shop to finish up my first prototype

I then made more Lexan pieces in the place of the cardboard, but didnt like how low it hung (roads are terrible here). Prototype number two fit to my liking a bit more as it had a smaller area intake into the box as opposed to the previous box. With this second box I noticed a gain in low end to more normal numbers/feeling, but still retaining the sound! This box sounds like taking the lid off of the stock bock, yet does not bog down in low RPMs. 1 1/2" foam was then added internally along the walls of the box. I saw a 50 degree difference in IAT from the first prototype with no insulation, stoplight and highway cruising. Granted the IAT is on the manifold, that is pretty good! Also, rivets. I love rivets, that is all.

Oh and I mounted the Air Injection Solenoid in the same spot as the factory box, all the lines reach

Factory air box mounting point used with my second prototype (bracket) and a simple clamp riveted to hold the Air Injection line up.

Aluminum right angles and custom angle for the front face

Carefully notched to match the lowside A/C line

Foam

Front face on and Filter on. Before paint

From under the car looking up

Peek-a-boo

Check valve/Air injection line

Getting ruffed up before paint

Painting in a friends unfinished bathroom LOL He gave me the ok! It is also being painted with Black Plasti-dip so it peeled off, painfully in bits

I chose to paint it Black to match the engine bay but also chose Plasti-dip so I could remove it if I change my mind. I really wanted to wrap it in vinyl CF to match my cooling plate but I doubt It will be a perfect match good enough for me. This will do for now!

So what do you guys think? It performs just like the stock air box, but had the LOUD VTEC switchover like the air box lid is off or a K&N FIPK. I could do something custom centered on the top of the box but right now im enjoying the neutral look. What do you think? "S2000" in red centered on it? Shoot me some ideas!

Nothing really... Why mess up a perfectly tuned car from factory. I have faith in those Honda engineers!

Agreed hands down! I often preach the same, I just found this little project to be fun. Sounds a lot deeper than the factory box, and IATs are similar. Only difference would be air flow so there is no telling what the numbers are without a dyno. Probably not as good of range as the OE box.

Yea as long as you are happy with it, that's what matters.

Do you have a front facing duct to channel the air up into the box?? Or is it just a straight down snorkel??

I had a prototype that channeled the air from the air dam, up a ramp into the box but it was just too many different pieces and large. I wanted it to be easily removable and easy to change the filter. If you look closely at your own S, there is a shroud that directs 100% of the air straight into the condensor/radiator. The OE box opening is at the top and has not much air going to it IMO. At the same time, Honda designed it to be there so im sure there is some logic. But I am going for the SOUND of an intake, with it still protected from heat soak, water, etc.

The opening is only 1" x 15". It pulls a pretty steady amount of vacuum. This box has very similar performance to the stock air box, definitely not better. Just a lot deeper SOUND.
