Deer Whistles
Deer are prey animals. Their stereotyped response to escaping predators is to run off in an unpredictable, zigzag manner through the woods. It works to keep changing directions when you've got a bear clipping your tail. It doesn't work so well against a car though..
This is the time of the year to be very, very, very aware of deer and their behavior. I don't know if the whistles work or not, but I do know that this time of year the buck are chasing the doe, and well, as with all things male, the little head takes over for the big head, and well, they just aren't concerned with anything but whats on the other end of the scent they smell. If the doe runs across the road - the buck will follow, no matter what noise you make or "whisles" you blow.
Indeed, if you want to have some fun, get a pair of old antlers, find a good spot in the woods and start clattering the horns together - every buck in ear shot will come running to you! (you do have to be up wind or disguise that ugly human scent you have, but if you hunt you already know that).
The last deer I got was last year - nice four point - only did $8500 damage to my wifes CR-V.
and yea it was in October. So, don't hunt with the car - use a rifle/bow/shotgun/camera, but not your car!
