Gonna do a valve job on my new s2k with 40k miles. Anything else to replace? Any gaskets, etc while I am there?

thanks!

Why does it need a valve job after only 40k miles? What are the symptoms?

No symptons just bought used so want to make sure all is in tip top shape as many have suggested to do.

Leave it as is,
its a difficult job and expensive to do and a waste of $
Do a leak down test to check any issues and go from there.

Valves should be adjusted in the 25k range after that it's good. Valve adjustment back to spec will make the car more responsive and operate smoother. Some AP2s have issue anyway.
If it's an AP1 check the retainers.

I suspect the OP means that he is going to adjust the valves, not do a valve job. I would do the same in his shoes. Not a big deal and it can prevent significant problems down the road. As others recommend, I might change the valve cover gasket and the spark plug tube seals and if it is an ap1 before the retainer upgrade (check engine number), I'd take a close look at the retainers for cracks. The gaskets might be fine and not need changing. But, once you are in there it is easy to do and so I guess you might as well do it, or save the parts for next time if they are ok.

While adjusting the valves, I would do plug change & new plug hole seal (30522-PFB-007), in addition to earlier mentioned gasket set and tube seal.
Due to age of your car, you could change 'o-ring for idler gear shaft (91301-pcx-003)', pcv valve (17130-pcx-003: ap2), spool valve filter assembly. (15825-pcx-015), 'o-ring next to oilpressure switch' (91319-paa-a01), ballade sport solenoid upper gasket' and billman TCT.
