Default Engine choice questions.

Hey all,

New to forums here, looking for advice on my 02 ap1. The f20 in it currently is sitting around 142k miles and I was wondering if (for track and street purpose) would it be better to go with a complete engine refresh top to bottom on the f20 or go with a low mileage f22c?

The car will see some track use often and also some commute, and I do have plans for a supercharger in the coming year or 2.

F22

Do you have reason to believe the F20 won't make it the next few years?

My F22c has 374,000 miles and it runs great with no measurable oil consumption on a 3000 mile oil change cycle. This engine was also boosted for 125,000 miles till my Rotrex blew up.

Like you I knew my engine could not last forever (I had 250,000 miles at this point) so I bought a new factory engine and head. The new factory engine and head are still in crates in my spare bedroom.

I would get it running perfectly and go. If you love it get a backup unmolested engine. I am not by any stretch of the imagination a mechanic, though I have overhauled several smallblock v8's. I would NEVER open up an F22c nor would I allow anyone short of Billman do it for me.

Just my thoughts!

Yes actually, it's got a weird misfire issue that I can't seem to rundown. Plus the last owner was not very nice to the car over all and I want to be rid of the bad juju from it.

Sidenote, if any one has an idea on the misfire it's only at idle and below about 2k rpm things I've checked include: iacv, compression, coils, sparkplugs, timing, and a valve adjustment. It also doesn't happen as often on 93 octane gas.

Low mile F22 or even a F20 with some F22 upgrades.

For the misfire have you had the injectors cleaned or at least tested? That can be a cause of a misfire. Sadly beyond that it is more serious stuff like valve train. You could do a compression and leakdown on the engine which could help identify where the misfire is coming from. Lastly is there a reason you wouldn't use premium fuel in it? IE 92 93 octane fuel?

We only have 91 in my area, that's all I've put in it unless I go out of town and can get 93, I have done compression and leak down but haven't had a chance to check injectors. Other info is it's a misfire on all four cylinders according to codes so hope that helps

Ah ok. Wasn't sure if you meant putting something lower in there sometimes. 91 should be fine. Have you checked/cleaned the map sensor? I think that can cause misfire issues.

Nope haven't checked that either but I wanted to rundown cheaper options first instead of throwing parts at it
