Name cards are treated very differently in Japan than in the US. It isn't just a piece of heavy paper to them, its a representation of yourself and should be respected and cared for. If you think about it in their context, it would make sense for a businessman to have a fancy cardholder.

But yeah over here its a little nuts

clearly over-engineered, thus you have to pay for all of those hours of design. When you think about how much time was spent putting it together it doesn't surprise me, but that is a lot of money to pay for a card holder. I'd love to have one though, just don't want to pay the $$$.
