Default HKS Dual and Rust

Hello all,

I have had my Invidia Q300 for two years now and I believe it is time for a change. I bought it because I got it at a rather huge discount...however, I have always wanted the HKS dual.

Before anyone jumps into the performance / engineering aspect of it, yes I know...I am more for the sounds here. The noise is not too loud, not too tame, just about right, and it is rather high pitched. Heard one paired with a Berk HFC (which I have), just amazing. :roll eyes:

About to pull the trigger, but I would like to see how you HKS dual exhaust owners take care of the maintenance. The exhaust, as we all know, is mild steel. What should I spray on before I put it on my S? What other things can I do (for example, don't drive short trips to prevent condensation...) to prevent rusting?

Or is the rusting situation being exaggerated? I live in Sacramento, CA...

Thanks,
Kevin

Love my HKS.

Is yours brand new? Light sanding and a fresh coat of black BBQ paint?

Mine has been on the car since before I owned it. 11 plus years.

It's got it's rattles and has needed a spot weld here and there, it needs some fresh paint but it sounds amazing. Especially with a test pipe.

I like the sound of the HKS dual, but would not buy an exhaust made of mild steel. I once had the Apexi N1 dual on my 240sx, and the mild steel piping rusted away and literally detached from the stainless steel mufflers after three years. Granted, I didn't spray it/protect it and drove it through a four season climate year round (something I don't do with my S2000), but still.

Just make sure you get the newer HKS dual. The older one was made with mild steel as opposed to the newer one which is stainless. I have had a few HKS dual exhausts and I have not had a single problem with any of them (even the notorious rattle in the resonator).

Thanks everyone! I am getting mine brand new through Moddiction. I am looking at http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleu...0771/204655490

If I put two layers of clear it should be pretty safe...

Haha dang, you drove it through all four seasons?! That's pretty cool though, at least you got to enjoy the sound and make the most out of it...I plan on driving two to three times a week.

I did not know HKS is making the exhaust in stainless steel now...I wonder if the one I got through Moddiction is stainless steel...

I shouldn't say new but newer. If you bought it new recently then you should be fine.

IIRC the mild steel version says Hiper as opposed to Hi Power on the muffler tip.

I run with a set and it does sound amazing. No problems with rust here in SoCal. I just polish it every so often to keep it shiny.

+1 for buying new - they're prone to that rattle issue in the resonator and the older ones aren't the same metal as the newer ones I believe. I got my dual from Moddiction a little while back

Awesome! Glad I made the right decision.

I just realized that the stainless steel SUS304 version is available for the Spec-L...but then I don't think SUH409 could be that bad, after so many years being available to the public.
